Two problems have shaped the proposal for the National Library of Mexico. First the issue of how information technology (internet, virtual media) is overpowering the library as a space for communication, preservation, and education forced us to rethink this typology. The proposal allows information technologies to be seen as tools that are an integral part of a new, more accessible library typology. Second, how the library can revitalize an area punished by gentrification processes, insecurity and abandon. The project generates a public space meant to spark, form to, and evolve with the community, in turn causing its own revitalization. Considering the future operation of the Train station, the proposal becomes a porous structure in which public areas(cafes, shops, galleries) are located on the ground level as a core. The core allows for public circulation, interaction with the neighborhood and the possibility to become a public space for leisure, meeting, and cultural activities. It is also the first point for accessing library information which serves as a link to the building. In search of a methodology, light became the main componentof the proposal. Different lighting conditions allow for specific programs to happen. For example darker areas are used for preservation and stacking; lighter areas for consulting and reading; brighter areas for circulation and leisure. All these light densities form a gradient scheme which generate an envelope condition or skin, able to reflect specific programs in space.
